The High School Transition: When Parents Need the Prep Course

As my son gears up to leave middle school and step into the mysterious world of high school, the school has been prepping everyone — the students and the parents. The kids seem to be cruising along, excited about new lockers and maybe taller lockers, while the parents (okay, me) are clutching our checklists like it’s the SATs all over again.

The funny thing is, we’ve been through high school. Some of us even survived college, grad school, and a few PTA bake sales. But somehow, seeing our kids approach it makes us feel like we’re the ones facing the pop quiz.

I’m trying to build “transition habits” for my son, reviewing homework, double-checking assignments, and establishing a rhythm that’ll help him juggle responsibilities. I tell myself it’s about preparing him for success, but really, I think I’m just trying to calm my own anxiety with structure.

As a consultant without a typical 9-to-5, I juggle my own endless to-do list between school drop-offs, phone calls that eat my day, and my second job as an unofficial snack supplier. By the time he’s home, he’s recharging, doing homework, or deep in video-game strategy, while I’m back at my desk chasing deadlines.

Lately, I’ve wondered if I should revisit that old advice I got when he was a baby: “Sleep when he sleeps.” Maybe now it’s “Work when he games.” Or better yet, “Breathe when he breathes.”

Because honestly, this transition isn’t just his, it’s ours. High school might be a big leap for him, but it’s also the next step in my education as a parent: learning when to let go, when to guide, and when to just quietly enjoy watching him grow into the person he’s meant to be.

So here’s to the next chapter, where the kids adapt faster than our Wi-Fi, and the parents are the ones who need orientation.
